HO HO HO!!! ), there have been many other things to focus on in an attempt to improve this forum and the interaction of all Members (old , new, borrowed and blue. ) who use it. The following paragraphs should enlighten you as to what has been changed, elliminated, re-arranged and added(and what might be added in the coming weeks, months.....well let's not go any further than the remaining time in 2008.

Where to begin?.....

I've been looking at this Board a lot lately, trying to figure out what went wrong, where everyone went, why and what would it take to get as many Members back as possible and how to get a steady influx of New Members....no easy task. I'll admit my life in the last couple years has been full of ups and downs, good times and bad, trials and tribulations.....so time hasn't been something I have had a lot of since work is a larger priority these days since it takes $$$ to pay my bills and survive and continue to afford the Hosting of this site and other projects I found myself undertaking. But after staring at the very high wall for quite awhile I have recently decided to start tearing it down and begin the very difficult task of getting this forum back on it's feet!(or should I say 'Paws' ??? )

So here we go....

Through the years this forum has been active, a lot of different things have been tried and some worked and some didn't. That's par for the course of any forum. But there were a lot of mistakes made in Member Management, Forum Staff and the general atmosphere of the board(not all bad but enough to damage the community I had hoped to establish here. So with a new outlook and many new ideas(which I hope will work and with help of Members can definately succeed! ) I embark on the rebirth of Carolina Panthers Den for all Panthers fans worldwide!

Re-Organization:

The first thing I did was look at all the User Groups that had been created over time...and there were a lot!...too many!(Quite a few ideas gone bad and never pruned. ) So I got out my claws and begun digging through this mess. Many unused User Groups have been deleted. Other Groups have been merged or renamed. The User Group List on the Forum Index now reflects some of these changes. One of the most important changes was illiminating the 'Inactive Members' group and dumping all of those users back into the Members group. By doing this I hope to alleviate any confusion caused to new Members with few or no posts previously by being stuck into the Inactive group. Hopefully now more members can view much more of the board and be able to interact with other Board Users and the Board Staff easier.

I am still working on elliminating or merging a few other User groups such as the Donator Groups. A retooling of the Forum Donation Program will be coming soon! We satill need funds to operate but through some new Ad programs this should eleviate some of the concearn. However, as always Donations are always appreciated.

Another area for reorganization was within the Forums themselves. I felt it was important to focus more on the Carolina Panthers than on Other Sports and other NFL Discussions (especially since so little is posted in those forums by Members.) With the addition of Two new Discussion Boards (some of the 'other projects' mentioned above) this purpose is served rather nicely by offering a larger venue for these areas. So the NFL News and Pro Sports forums have been closed to future discussions but will remain open for current news reporting by our Forum Sports Bots (RSS Feeds). However you will be able to visit out Network Affiliate Sites to continue your discussions on the NFL and Pro Sports articles found here at The Den. Similar topics will be posted at each forum for your conversations. Links to the appropriate Board are posted on each discontinued Forum here as well as in a Redirect Forum Link! Please look for links and redirects to the following Boards:

Additional Forum Changes:

I have reorganized some of the forums we have been using here to provide a quicker navagation for all users. Please feel free to look at the new arrangement on the Board Index page. I tried to avoid too many Sub-Forums although there is certain areas where I feel they work just fine(such as the Carolina Panthers Discussion area.. But in order to focus more on the Panthers and Carolina Sports I have highlighted the more important forums on the Forum Index.

One New Addition: I have added a Forum Redirect to our Blogs section, which will be re-opening soon! The purpose of the Blogs will focus on reports and observations on the Carolina Panthers by the Fans! Of course each Member can also have personal Blogs if they wish. In the near future we will be able to utilize [b]Group Blogs [/b]once the newer version of [b]IPB[/b] and it's componants are released!

[b]Removing Unused Modificatiosn and Dead Links:[/b]

I will be removing any Dead Links that may still exist from previous [b]Modifications [/b]as well as removing any [b]Modifications[/b] that are no longer used(which you may or may not be able to see currently.) In an attempt to make the forum easier to navagate and a review of the current [b]Link Structure [/b]will be underway soon!

[b]Member Involvement:[/b]

I am working on a few ideas to increase [b]Member[/b] participation and involvement and to make the atmosphere of the forum more fun for everyone! More details to follow...keep checking back to this toipic for upcoming info...

[b]Board Upgrade:[/b]

As I mentioned earlier thier will be a [b]MAJOR Board Upgrade [/b]as soon as the latest version of the software is released to public. The functionality of the software will change a lot from an Admin standpoint and even offers some new exciting features(such as a built-in [b]Reputation System[/b] )for [b]Users[/b] as well. So I am holding off on current upgrades which are available now(mostly due to the large amount of Modifications installed on this Board.) The newer version of [b]IPB[/b] will offer easier upgrades without altering the source code to add modifications. So it is better to wait it out for now...besides I'd rather not undertake a [b]Major[/b] upgrade during the [b]Football Season[/b].


I hope this gives you some insight as to what has been changed, removed, improved and impending improvements still to come. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask and as always your ideas and suggestions are always welcomed!

Due to this the host shut down the site until we were able to isolate the issue and take the appropriate action. This took more than a day to resolve. After hours of investigating error logs within IPB and the server, it was determined that certain bots have been causing the overload so their ip addresses were quickly banned and monitered for alternate addresses. Most of these bots have been banned by now! However I am currently closely monitering the situation. Additional measures have been taken to block these Nasty Bots so hopefully we will not get hit again in the future. It's something I'll have to keep up on to ensure this doesn't happen again.

In addition I have temperarily turned off some board Features and Modifications to be certain thier is no additional strain on the server. As things get back to normal with close monitering I hope to turn on these features again...only time will tell.....

So that you aware of what has been turned off I will list the more important features so there is no confusion:

In addition there may be some things that look wierd(like larger letters in usernames on the Board index-now fixed!) ....this and other issues will be resolved soon. I had to reupload a board file which had been corrupted due to the recent issues. Once I re-add some modification codes to the new file things will look normal again...just bare with me.

If you notice anything that is out of order or looks strange please don't hesitate to notify me by posting a topic in our Suppoirt Forum.

That should do it for now. I apologize for the inconvenience this may cause some users but I'd rather have a basic Board that works than none at all. So let's concetrate on more discussions on the Carolina Panthers and any Off Topic banter. That's the original purpose of this place so let's get back to basics for awhile........

I have to do this process for each board I own so it is going to take awhile to get everything back to normal. But everything will be fine soon enough.

After I get this board and all others upgraded I may experiment with some functionality between boards where Members can cross over to another board using thier existing ID here(or there...depending where you come from originally. ) But there are still some things I am unsure of regarding that format so it may only be a test for now. I hope to make it permanant down the road but IPS needs to work out some issues which concearn me. We'll see how it goes....

For now just be aware of the impending upgrade...I will update this thread with all progress I make.

I never experienced a problem here on this board until I moved another board to this server and upgraded it to the latest version.....

Unfortunately there is not much that can be done about this until the next release of IPB (which is coming soon as a patch to many bug reports and minor issues.) I have in the meantime found some temperary fixes that might work.

1) I have applied a coding change via patch to one of the board files so hopefully this resolves the issue......but no guarentees. If you are having trouble staying logged in please make sure you check 'remember me' on your login screen.

2) if that still does not work you can try something I found on the support forums:

on this forum:

find the "Delete All Cookies Set By This Board" (above shoutbox) and click it to release the cookies.

in your browser(s):

a) delete cookies and files(cache)

b) change your security settings to low. Log back into board(remembering to select "Remeber Me.") Then reset your security settings to medium or whatever it was set at previously. (If it's set too high it may give you trouble logging into websites...medium or medium-low is recomended!) after being logged into this forum for awhile you should stay logged in hopefully.

c) if the above does not work...limit your use of viewing other member's Profiles-this is what is known to cause the bug amung other reasons.

This is all I can suggest at this time. If anything improves I will let you know. January 2007:

BOARD & FEATURES UPGRADES

The Board will be upgraded to the IPB 2.2 series which will add many new features and improvements to our Community! We will also be upgrading the Arcade & Battle Game as well as many other features that currently exist. (However it may take some time to get everything back to normal so we ask for your patience.)

Upgrade of the Community Blog modual may also occur as the current one will no longer work once board is upgraded. (But at $20/year for new support contract I am debating the usefullness of this feature since not many use it and only Premium Members can currently access it. (I may just scrap it in favor of another feature and use it elsewhere. )

I may add a Picture Gallary, which would probably be more useful for a Football Board than the Blog. If I can get enough Donations raised for Hosting renewal and other improvements and have enough for this feature it may happen before the 2007 Panthers season commences.

I will attempt to upgrade the current board skins and/or add new ones(whichever is more feasable.)

Please check this forum for when the Upgrades will take place! We may use our Back Up Board while this is going on!

Interactive SPORTS STORE for MEMBERS

I may add a storefront where Members can sell thier Sports related items with a percentage of the proceeds going to this site to cover continued Hosting, Fees and expenses. This would be a more advanced version of our Sports Ads forum. Those who purchase products will be able to choose shipping options , etc. There may even be an Auction section!

However after adding the new Portal system it seemed to have a conflict with the Battle Game we have installed. After seeking a solution to the problem (and not being able to check back on it due to other issues recently) I finally made it back to the support site for the Battle Game and found that someone had posted a possible(but unsupported) fix. I just implemented the fix and all seems to be working well now! You can currently access the Portal by clicking the 'Portal' link underneeth the Board Banner in the submenu(where all the links are) I will be making the portal are 'Home' page later tonight so you see it first when visiting the board. Somehow when I was editing the forum description in the ACP our 'original' Welcome forum and all it's topics/posts got deleted! I don't know how this is possible or what happened....but some glitch has swallowed our forum and all topics within it This is quite disasterous because all of our Welcome threads and New Member information threads are now gone for good! (as far as I know...trying to get help on this issue but I am not expecting any miracles. )

I contacted our webhost to retrieve a database backup priior to the error but they have informed me it will cost $75! (If any one wishes to donate money for this retrieval we will attempt to restore the lost forum and it's contents.....otherwise yall are SOL! I don't have this kind of cash and with hosting renewal coming up soon I can't justify it for this issue.)

I have posted a topic at the IPS support forums to see if there is a way to retrieve the lost forum and or topics within it(once again...not expecting any miracles )

For now...I will start some new threads and everyone will need to repost where they are from and what they do for a living.......All current members up to this point may re-introduce themselves in our New Members Thread. I'm a visiting adminstrator and I'll confirm the mentioned lag issue. I'm using DSL and it's not a broadband hiccup, it's all throughout your system (even the PMs where there's very little data to read.) What this suggests is too many database reads or too many processes being run causing abnormal delays in screen writes.

Judging by the 2 consistant hangups I'm seeing in processing, I'd guess you have at least 2 ill written mods or resource hogs being processed with every screen write. (including PMs and even the editor here) That suggests to me that they're probably user related in nature and checking the database for stats with every task.

This may not be a issue from where you sit but having one of the slowest message boards on the internet should be. Sacrificing system performance for site cool has never been a user friendly consideration where I came from.

We have had it set at 1000 posts before Members were allowed to change it to something they would like(replacing the Rank Titles you now see.) To make things a bit more interesting(and entertaining) around here I have decided to lower that restriction to 500 minimum posts Once you have reached 500 posts feel free to change the Member Title text to something that fits your personality or interest.

However, there is a few things I must stress to ALL Members: You may only use 50 charecters (including spaces) and up to two lines of text MAX!!!-I have modified the template code to prevent anyone from going over this limit! Any Member Titles that exceed this limit(prior to the change) will be removed! Also absolutely NO obscene or Non-PG-13 text allowed! We have the right to edit or remove any Member Title that does not conform to Board Guidelines!
